Saturday, September 14

Beaune is delightful, typically-French town--not too big and not too small. Our hotel is very near the center of town. It is lovely. Surprisingly when we checked in, we were greeted with those heartening words, "We've upgraded your room!" What nice treat. However, as tired as we were yesterday, we would have been happy with a broom closet.

The highlight of today was walking out of the hotel and smack into the Saturday Farmers' Market. It covered several blocks and included all manner of foodstuffs (meat, fish,  beautifully-fresh produce), as well as clothes (inner and outer wear), household goods-including everything from kitchenware to mattresses. By 1:00 o'clock, all evidence of the market was gone from the streets. Quite a feat, considering the size of the market.

Speaking of the streets, if anyone is planning a trip to Beaune, be sure to pack a couple of good walking shoes. All the town streets are made of cobblestones that make walking a tricky adventure.

While away from home, I like to sometimes order "out of the box". Last night it was an appetizer of green salad with six sautéed chicken livers. Tonight's dinner started with a traditional Burgundyian treat of six escargots (love that butter, parsley and garlic!) and an egg poached in wine (Burgundy wine, of course) served together on an appetizer plate. Who needs a main course after all that!!

Can you believe I ate the whole thing!

We are in wine country, and it's difficult to make a decision with so many choices. So for tonight's dinner, we hit upon the bright idea of ordering two half-bottles of wine. Voila! Another taste test adventure.
                                                       Excellent choices for dinner

A short walk back to the hotel in some light drizzle ended our first full day in Beaune. Bonne Nuit.
